College Entrance Essay Editing

Importance of College Admissions Essays

There can be no doubt that college admission essays are one of the most important components of your child’s future.

A student may have an impressive G.P.A., enviable SAT or ACT scores, and a bevy of after-curricular and volunteer activities in his or her application, but the admission essay is often the deciding factor for many colleges when they examine prospective students.

Whether or not this is fair does little to change the facts. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, 27 percent of admissions officers said entrance essays were of "considerable importance" to the admission process in 2009, nearly double the 14 percent who responded in kind in 1993.

The stakes are even higher at the prestigious private schools at the top of many applicants’ lists: Among "selective" colleges and universities, defined as those that accept fewer than 50 percent of students who apply, well over half (56.6 percent) attach "considerable importance" to essays.

Approximately 80 percent of four-year colleges require a writing sample, most often an admission essay, so it is not something that students can easily avoid. NACAC also reports that because record numbers of students are applying to colleges, more admissions officers are turning to entrance essays to weed through candidates and identify successful applicants.

However, while admission essays are increasingly growing in importance, that is not to say that students cannot use this bias to their advantage. Essays can be a great help to ‘borderline’ students (those with about a 50 percent chance of gaining admission), as the writing sample is often the component that puts them over the top.

Yet even top students can use an essay to vault them past their many other talented rivals as they fight for admission at competitive schools, as well as scholarships that can defray the ever-rising cost of tuition.  Scholarship selection committees are even more reliant than admissions officers on essays to choose successful applicants, given that high-achieving students all have impressive track records and there are often just a few cash grants available.
